Description: |
Hierarchical, block-based physical design is a necessity for modern system-on-a-chip design. The sheer size and complexity of these chips require that the physical design be partitioned into multiple blocks, each containing hundreds of thousands or even millions of gates of logic. One challenge of hierarchical physical design is to create interconnect between blocks at the top-level and to meet aggressive timing, area and power goals. Traditional IC routers were designed to interconnect standard cells and are not adequate for the task of top-level routing. Top-level routing requires a tool that allows the designer to craft optimal interconnect and gives the designer the ability to use techniques such as wide wires, non-standard metal spacing, metal shielding and interactive routing to satisfy timing, area, power and signal integrity constraints. |
