• Real-time transaction processing: this process starts with the merchant's request for payment authorization, includes the identification and authentication of the merchant and consumer, account selection and authorization processes, real-time balance management and the capture of the transaction. All of these processes need to take place in real-time due to consumer interaction and to update accounts
• Settlement: captured transactions are cleared to the settlement processing process, where revenue-sharing calculations are performed and the financial reports are created
• Post-purchase care: A completed and settled transaction is subject to reversals via refunds or chargebacks, which must be handled consistently and efficiently
