ABSTRACT:
Internet services for soliciting bids on print jobs (RFQ or Request For Quote systems) were introduced nearly from the inception of the on-line printing industry, which is quite understandable considering the benefits it offers. These benefits are quite obvious: elimination of lengthy communications via slower off-line means, the ability, for buyers, to choose from a wider selection of offers that are more attractive from a financial or technical standpoint. Often, turnaround time also plays a role. The buyer can immediately choose an available supplier when for some reason the existing supplier cannot handle a request. Furthermore, once the on-line service provides the basic ordering functions, the sky is the limit for advanced solutions and technical innovations. On-line printing services can offer a variety of tools that can store job specifications for repeated use, evaluate price offers using sophisticated analytic tools, track the status of the jobs and generally maintain closer communication with the suppliers through electronic means.
